The following match report was submitted by Kennet Vale’s 2nd reserve player, Steve Richardson. Thanks Steve!
Hi all,
I decided on Thursday night to go to Devizes HQ and watch what is regarded by any Table Tennis expert with any sound knowledge, as the fixture of the season Poulshot A v Kennet Vale and as anticipated the match did not disappoint, but the final result 7-3 in Poulshot’s favour was regarded by anyone witnessing the match a miscarriage of justice. With both teams without their number 1 players, Thom Pears who is now the lead Choir boy for St Pauls Cathedral and on a world tour as we speak, and Steve Richardson with a crippling injury the match was always going to be tight. The Match opened up with the two captains the very overweight and unfit Jamie Smith v Brian Rayment, looking very focused. A very close match under way with Brian with his superior technique and class, against Jamie pathetic style looked sure to be the winner. With Jamie now firmly anchored in the middle of the table as he was struggling to carry all that weight round, he resorted to the now famous NETS and EDGES that many teams have had to put up with this season, and managed to SCRAMBLE a win. Unfortunately this pattern continued throughout the evening, until the last match of the night. Brian and Alan Duke, regarded by many as the best doubles partnership in Wilts in the last decade against Steve Deeble and Jamie. One could only feel sorry for Steve having to put up with Jamie, who had to request a Oxygen Cylinder and mask be put by the table so he could finish the match (don’t eat too many mince pies over Xmas Jamie). As expected a total mismatch was the outcome with Kennet Vale totally dominating proceedings, with poor Jamie just having enough PUFF left to shake hands. A great night.
